If God is your Father, dear one, you are His daughter. But what does it mean to be a daughter of God? Why is being a daughter of God significant? Does your life reflect your identity as God’s daughter?

Throughout the pages of Scripture, God demonstrates that He dearly loves His children – those He has both created and called.

It is an enormous honor for us to be considered children of God…for you to be a daughter of God.

No other creature in the universe has this opportunity. We are His children, His daughters.

As His children, we have the unique right to go before Him and ask for anything we need. As His beloved daughters, we can be assured that we are welcome in His presence at any time.

Regardless of the situations we may find ourselves in, God opens His arms and allows us to approach His throne and bring before Him whatever concerns us in that moment.

Just as a good earthly father invites his children to come to him with their hurts and sorrows, so our Heavenly Father invites us, His beloved daughters, to lay our burdens down at His feet.

What does it mean to be a daughter of God?

It means you are deeply loved, beautifully cherished, and truly belong.

It means you are His, and you have all the benefits of being His.

It means you are loved: recklessly, relentlessly, redemptively.

As a daughter of God, you are loved by Him

The apostle John writes about this amazing love the Father has for us and how it’s demonstrated by the fact that He calls us His children.

More than that, God demonstrated His incredible love for each of us by sending His Son to walk our roads and to live a sinless life that we could not.

He ultimately gave His Son as a sacrifice on our behalf.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life

John 3:16, ESV

The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ shows most poignantly the depths of which we are loved as children, as daughters of the Father.

As a daughter of God, you belong to Him

One of my favorite books in all of Scripture is Hosea. In it, God illustrates His love for His people through the life of the prophet.

At the time, Israel had wandered far from God’s call. And much of Hosea is spent describing God’s pain over the sinful and wicked ways of His people.

In the first chapter, Hosea’s wife bore a third child. God commanded them to name their son Lo-ammi, which means “Not My People”.

This was to demonstrate that He would no longer call Israel His people.

But, in verse 10, God promises that in the future, they would be called “children of the living God”.

No matter what we have done, when we come to Christ we become daughters of the living God. We are no longer considered “not His people”, but through the Cross, we are declared His children and we belong to Him.

In fact, more than 40 times in Scripture you can read God’s beautiful declaration that we are His. The original verses are spoken over the nation of Israel, and through Christ’s sacrifice we are all welcomed as His own.

Here are just a few:

They shall be My people, and I will be their God.

Jeremiah 32:38, ESV

He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. (daughter!)

Revelation 21:7, ESV (addition, mine)

And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them.”

Revelation 21:3, ESV

As a daughter of God, you have the right to be a child of God

As followers of Jesus, we have been given the right to be children of God.

This status is given to us simply on the basis of our belief in Him. Everyone who receives Jesus and believes in Him is given the right to be one of God’s children.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

John 1:12, ESV

This is due to His great love for you, dear one.

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.

1 John 3:1 ESV

As a daughter of God, you have the right to come before Him

That’s right, sister. You have access to God.

Step right towards Him with boldness, confidently approaching Him.

in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.

Ephesians 3:12, ESV

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:16, ESV

As a daughter of God, you are an heir of His Kingdom

The natural outcome of belonging to God is that we share in the inheritance of His Son.

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Romans 8:16-17

When we come to the Lord and choose to follow Him, surrendering our all to Him for all our lives, we are included in His coming kingdom and His promise is for us to inherit the kingdom as co-heirs with Christ.

To be considered not simply friends of God, but daughters and heirs is a high honor indeed.

When the world seeks to drag us down and suck the hope out of our hearts, we can be reminded that the One who created and sustains the universe calls us His daughters, His children, His heirs.
