Your prayers for your children shape not just their earthly future, but their eternity. It’s important to pray for your children intentionally and to have a prayer strategy for your kids, on top of your normal day to day prayer for their health, well being, and joy.

what and how to pray for your children for moms

Some women call them war room prayer for their children, other call them Biblical declarations, and others don’t call them anything special (they just do it!).

Whatever you call it, praying for your children is essential and the words you pray are very important.

That’s why, as a woman who prays, you should intentionally pray the Word of God over your children.

Why Praying For Your Children Is So Important

Your children have an enemy who is prowling about like a lion, just waiting to devour them – their purpose, their future, their eternity. They can stand firm and resist him, but they will need strength and knowledge and faith to do so (1 Peter 5:8-9).

This same enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. But Jesus? He brings abundant life to them! (John 10:10)

And the prayers of a righteous mama accomplish much (this is a loose paraphrase of James 5:16).

When you pray for your children, you are literally fighting for them. You are waging war for them against an enemy who is not flesh and blood, and cannot be fought in earthly ways (Ephesians 6:12).

How To Pray For Your Children

So how do you best pray for your kids? Using the Word of God.

When Jesus was in the desert and satan came to Him, tempting Him, Jesus resisted with Scripture. The Word of God is powerful, my sister at arms. It is the mightiest weapon you have to defend your children with.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
~Hebrews 4:12

So pray using the Word of God. Search out verses to declare over their lives. And not in some selfish, name-it-claim-it prosperity kind of a way either. No, in a Biblical, following the example of Jesus kind of a way.

When Jesus prayed, His heart was that of the Father’s. He prayed for forgiveness of sin, healing, wholeness, faithfulness, and relationship. These are prayers to pray.

Pray for God’s will over your children’s lives, dear mama. And watch Him move mightily.

What To Pray For Your Children

So what verses should you pray over your children’s lives? Here are some places to start:

Repentance From Sin

We are all born into sin and need Jesus to deliver us. Pray for your children to see their sin and repent from it.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
~1 John 1:9

Salvation

Pray for your children to see Jesus as their Savior, not just a genie who grants favor or forgiveness when approached. Pray the they come to a genuine place of repentance and submission to Him.

because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
~Romans 10:9

Faithfulness To God

Pray that your child will be faithful to God. But also ask God to give them a heart of stewardship, that they would use the gift, talents, and privileges He has blessed the with for God’s glory and goodness.

Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.
~1 Corinthians 4:2

Love For The Word Of God

Oh sweet mama, pray this one thing daily and watch the harvest that comes of those prayers! Teaching your child to love the Word of God will do more for them than you can even begin to dream. Pray for it to take root in their life, for them to love it and read it and memorize it.

A children who seeks God’s Word and treasures it will become an adult who is faithful to God.

Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.
~Psalm 119:35

Growing In Wisdom

Ask God to teach your child to desire wisdom and to pray for it, even as you pray it for them.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
~James 1:15

For Healthy Relationships

Ask God to give your child healthy relationships with others who love Him. Ask the Lord to help them find a community of friends to encourage them and to also make your child an encouragement to his friends.

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
~Proverbs 13:20

Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
~1 Corinthians 15:33

Obedient Heart

Begin praying early for your child to have an obedient heart…and for wisdom in parenting your child, too. A strong will and determined spirit are not the same as a rebellious one, but without discipline and prayer they can become synonymous.

But discipline and discipling of your child can teach them to love Jesus and long to obey Him.

Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”
~John 14:23

For Godly Character

Pray for the heart of your children to honor God and for their character to reflect Him. Pray that they reject the temptation of this world and instead chase after God’s goodness.

So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
~2 Timothy 2:22

For Peace Over Anxiety

Children today seem to carry so much on their shoulders. Anxiety and depression are widespread. Begin praying early for your child to walk in God’s peace. And teach them to bring their cares to Him.

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
~Philippians 4:6

When To Pray For Your Children

Pray these prayers today. And every day.

Begin to pray for them with these verses, but also ask the Lord to give you more and more as you read the Word and as your children grow.
